A format that leaves room for the music
wherethetimegoes — For Dublin label wherethetimegoes, the Potboiler cassette series offers a small, practical way to help a release take shape.
Before a recording reaches a listener, it needs decisions around it. What belongs together? How should it look? When is it ready to leave the hard drive? For wherethetimegoes, a cassette series offered a way to make some of those decisions in advance.
In Bandcamp Daily’s October 2026 profile, Dean McGrath describes Potboiler as a repeatable visual format that relieved artists of having to settle a release’s entire identity. The Dublin label could supply a frame while the musician concentrated on the material inside it. The interesting design decision was how much could remain open.
One concrete record of that approach is Odd Ned’s Potboiler No. 2: Rushes. The artist’s Bandcamp page dates the release to 21 January 2019 and lists a cream-coloured C45 cassette edition. A title, a number and a physical format give the work a position within a series without requiring a claim that all its music belongs to a single genre.
The social setting matters too. In a 2022 interview with In Sheep’s Clothing, McGrath recalls friendships and encounters around Dublin’s All City Records, alongside the beginnings of digital mixtapes. His account connects releases to people learning what they could make together. A catalogue, in that telling, has a social life before it has a finished sequence of releases.
The release page makes those decisions concrete. It lists ten tracks alongside digital album and cassette editions. Writing, production, mixing and mastering are credited to Denis O’Connor. The series supplies a shared container; the credits still identify the work inside it. Here, a repeatable format and a named maker sit side by side.
A cassette gives a recording edges: a side, a running time, a place in a numbered series. Potboiler’s invitation is to let that frame do some of the work. The release can take shape without every question around the music having to be answered first.
Why it matters
The work of a label can include making decisions easier. A repeatable format offers one way to give uncertain work a place to begin meeting an audience.
